New Jersey Compartment Syndrome Treatment

What is compartment syndrome?

Compartment syndrome is a complex medical condition that occasionally occurs as the result of trauma, surgery, burn, frostbite, overexertion or other reasons.

The muscles and other deep tissues swell, compressing blood vessels and nerves. If left untreated, compartment syndrome can lead to significant damage.

What are the results of compartment syndrome if left untreated?

  • Difficulty or inability to use extremity (i.e. arms and legs).
  • Loss of soft tissues of extremity.
  • Complete loss of extremity.

How is compartment syndrome treated?

The initial treatment is a procedure called fasciotomy, a surgery to relieve the excessive pressure. After this, a skin graft is placed. This procedure usually solves the functional problem, however a significant cosmetic defect is usually the end result.

At Atlantic Surgical Associates, Dr Volshteyn, a board certified plastic surgeon, developed a series of reconstructive techniques designed to improve the cosmetic appearance of the defects resulting from fasciotomy surgery.
