New Jersey Brow Lift Surgery

The forehead is one of the first places on the face to show signs of aging, and it makes sense: almost all of our expressions include forehead or eyebrow movement. They rise when hopeful or skeptical, arch when we smile, and furrow together when we are angry or upset. The problem arises when repeated daily use leaves a mark — right between the eyebrows or across the forehead. Skin can droop and the face can look more tired and angry.

This is where the brow lift comes into play.  Brow lifts raise the forehead, smooth the skin, and eliminate any sag or droop in the forehead and eyebrow area. Brow lifts create a youthful and alert appearance and a skilled surgeon will make sure a patient does not wind up with a permanently surprised look.  Brow lifts can essentially restore grace and peace to physical appearance.

What do brow lifts treat?

Brow lifts target the earliest signs of aging: drooping eyebrows and the furrowed forehead.  Brow lifts are targeted procedures that focus on the forehead and the brow, not on the eyes. Droopy eyelids or puffiness under the eyes are not treated with a brow lift. Brow Lifts do, however, compliment other procedures such as blepharoplasty (upper and lower eyelid surgery) you may be interested in.

Am I a candidate for a brow lift?

For any elective surgery you should be in good physical and mental health. That always comes first. When consulting with your physician, the two of you can determine if the procedure is appropriate for your goals, your problem areas and your expectations. Brow lifts are commonly performed between the ages of 40 and 60. The degree of wrinkling, drooping, and creasing present on the forehead will determine if a patient needs a traditional brow lift or a mini brow lift. A mini brow lift can be performed on someone as early as their late 20′s to 30′s.

It all starts with a consultation with Dr. Volshteyn. The consultation is the perfect place to honestly discuss your goals as well as any questions that you may have. At the consultation you and your physician can determine the best procedure for you. There are some risks involved with brow lifts – just as there are for all surgeries – and your physician will discuss these with you.

What is the procedure for a brow lift?

Traditional brow lift

A traditional brow lift consists of a long incision made in the hairline that runs along top of the head from temple to temple. Skin can then be pulled up and excess skin can be removed. The pulling up of the skin can create a higher hairline than before the surgery. At times the muscles that contribute to furrowed brows or transverse wrinkles may be modified to reduce motion. Because the incision is in the hairline, scars are hidden from view.  Some may experience temporary hair loss (permanent hair loss is rare).

Mini brow lift

The mini brow lift was created for younger patients with fewer signs of aging and require minor corrective measures. The procedure itself is much like a traditional brow lift except that instead of one long incision, two or three smaller incisions (1-2″ each) are made in the hairline. The skin is pulled up, lifting the forehead and eyebrows and smoothing out drooping or sagging skin. Sometimes muscles may be modified to stop the frowning motion as well as to slow down further aging affects. The effect is not as dramatic, however it is perfect for younger patients who want to lift the outer parts of a brow.

What can I expect after a brow lift?

While the healing process will continue for several weeks, you will be able to return to work in one to two weeks.

It is important to follow all of your doctor’s orders such as taking prescribed medicines and sleeping with your head elevated. You may be groggy from the anesthesia for the first 24 hours.  Rest is also an important factor as it promotes healing. Expect to see some bruising and swelling, peaking on the third day. As your body heals your results will become more and more prominent.

The brow lift procedure takes about two hours. If combined with other procedures you should expect the surgeries to last longer. The final results are worth the healing process. Instead of frown lines and baggy skin you will have beautiful youthful brows. You will have self confidence knowing your inner beauty and youth isn’t masked by a tired, weary scowl.
