New Jersey Belly Button Surgery

An umbilicoplasty is very common when one has a tummy tuck, however in some cases there may be a desire to solely change the appearance of your belly button without extensive surgery. An umbilicoplasty, also known as belly button surgery, changes the look and shape of the belly button alone.

The initial shape of your belly button is determined at birth; many of us being an ‘innie’ or ‘outtie’, but factors such as child birth, pregnancy, massive weight loss, or an umbilical hernia can alter its appearance.

How is an umbilocoplasty performed?

The procedure can be performed in our office under local anesthesia. The procedure takes about an hour.  A small incision is made in the belly button, and excess tissue is removed. Incisions are hidden within in the belly button. Stitches can either be dissolvable or need to be removed within 7-10 days.

What are the potential risks and complications of an umbilicoplasty?

Patients are able to go home right after the procedure is completed. Swelling, bruising, and minor discomfort are possible the first 24-48 hours.  Patients are able to return to work and normal routing the next day. As with any surgical procedure there is always some risk of infection, however this is a rare occurrence with an umbilicoplasty.
