The forehead is one of the first places on the face to show signs of aging, and it makes sense: almost all of our expressions include forehead or eyebrow movement. They go up when hopeful or skeptical, arch nicely when we smile and furrow together when we are angry or upset. The problem is that repeated use, day in and day out, can leave a mark — right between your eyebrows or traversing across your forehead. Skin can droop and your face can look more tired or angry than ever.
Enter the Brow Lift. Brow Lifts lift the forehead, in effect smoothing the skin and eliminating any sag or droop you may have in the forehead and eyebrow area. Brow lifts make you look younger and more alert and a good surgeon will make sure you never get that permanently surprised look. Brow Lifts wipe a tired, haggard look away. Brow lifts, basically, can restore you to a more graceful and peaceful looking you.
What Do Brow Lifts Treat?
Brow Lifts target the earliest signs of aging: the drooping eyebrows and the furrowed forehead. By moving the forehead skin up, your skin looks younger and smoother and any tired, haggard or worried look you used to have 24/7 will be replaced with a happier looking you. But let’s be clear: Brow Lifts are targeted procedures that focus on the forehead and the brow, not on the eyes. Droopy eyelids or puffiness under the eyes won’t be affected by a Brow Lift. The good news is that Brow Lifts can nicely compliment other procedures you may be interested in such as Eyelid Surgery or any other augmentation.
Am I a candidate for a Brow Lift?
For any elective surgery you should be in good physical and mental health. That always comes first. When you meet for a consultation with your physician the two of you can determine if the procedure is appropriate for your goals, your problem areas and your expectations. Brow Lifts are commonly performed on people between the ages of 40 and 60. The degree of wrinkling, drooping and creasing present on forehead will determine if a patient needs a traditional Brow Lift or a Mini Brow Lift. A mini brow lift can be performed on someone as early as between their late 20′s to 30′s.
How Do Brow Lifts Work?
It all starts with a consultation with Dr. Volshteyn. The consultation is the perfect place to honestly discuss your goals as well as any questions that you may have. At the consultation you and your physician can determine the best procedure for you. There are some risks involved with Brow Lifts – just as there are for all surgeries – and your physician will discuss these with you.
A traditional Brow Lift consists of a long incision made in the hairline that runs on top of the head from temple to temple. Skin can then be pulled up and excess skin can be removed. The pulling up of the skin can create a higher hairline than before the surgery. At times the muscles that contribute to furrowed brows or transverse wrinkles may be modified to reduce motion. Because the incision is in the hairline scars are hidden from view, but some people may experience some temporary hair loss (but permanent hair loss is rare).
Mini Brow Lift
The Mini Brow Lift was created for younger people who have fewer signs of aging and so require fewer corrective measures. The procedure itself is much like a traditional Brow Lift except that instead of one long incision two or three smaller incisions (1-2″ each) are made in the hairline. The skin is pulled up, lifting the forehead and eyebrows and smoothing out drooping or sagging skin. Sometimes muscles may be modified to stop the frowning motion as well as to slow down further aging affects. The effect is not as dramatic but perfect for younger people who want to lift outer parts of a brow.
What can I expect?
While the healing process will continue for a few weeks, you will be able to go back to work in about a week or two.
It is important to follow all of your doctor’s orders such as taking prescribed medicines and sleeping with your head elevated. You may be groggy from the anesthesia for a couple of days but this is a good thing as resting promotes healing. Expect to see some bruising and swelling with the swelling peaking on the third day. But as your body heals your results will become more and more prominent.
Brow Lift surgery takes about two hours. If combined with other procedures you should expect the surgeries to last longer. The final results are worth the healing process. Instead of frown lines and baggy skin you will have beautiful youthful brows. You can know that who you are will make the first impression, not an unfortunate scowl or tired look.
